There are different ways to approach this book in terms of the layout. I want to base my ideas on that as it’s the most convincing thing to change the book.
Two possible audiences to keep in mind with these the book could either be a mushroom enthusiast probably a bit older or a city person dreaming about country life.
In terms of layout, this could change a lot, so it would be more reliant on the imagery less than text and text in terms of a city person. This will be different, so it relies on what I get from the photographer that he’s also doing the text because he really likes mushrooms and has an innate passion for them. I believe he’ll do something slightly broader, so it’s more inclined towards a city person.
I have done my initial idea space, and that the first idea is to somewhat hide the photos and have the text as the main focus. This is to showcase how mushrooms are placed around environments without you noticing it. This would also require some editing of the photos to make them somewhat disappear into the book. It would also be interesting to emboss them in this approach.
Doing an all spread photo book would be interesting as it would allow for the image in question to focus. This would also allow getting details about the species of mushrooms showcased, but this would also limit the amount of text in the book, and it would also be difficult as a binding.
This book is based on a grid referencing how mushrooms behave. They can appear anywhere, so having a small agreed to allow for multiple different layouts that showcase the abundance of types of mushrooms and where they are located. This approach would be the most appropriate for the theme and combine illustrations and photography in one.
This idea is a photo book minimising the text and focusing purely on the photos as they are really quite beautiful. I would want the scale of the photos to be accurate so that all the mushrooms are true to size in the book as all the photos he has pretty much had a scale on it. You would be able to figure that out as well in any of the other types of books if I were to do a reference to it somewhere else, maybe start or end of the book, but this will just have the mushroom be as big as it is a bit of text about the mushroom.
This idea is more inclined towards a mushroom lover as it would be mainly text and some photos here. They’re having one page full of text whilst the other page is the photo and a bit of text about that specific mushroom. I just don’t believe that my writing would do this type of writing for it as he is aware that I am the one making the book. I’m not that proficient in my mushroom knowledge as he would also like to get many more people interested in mushrooms. It would make more sense for him to do it simply.
Working with an overlay of photos would be really quite cool, or possibly doing illustrations and photos overlaid as it would allow for a sense of play within it. The issue with it is that it could seem childish and not appropriate because it would be a bit too much. I also feel like space is quite easy to forget him any books having images and text have space to breathe, I find quite interesting, and I really like, and I think that’s the Scandinavian in me.
This idea is somewhat a version of the previous one using illustrations and photography in one book but utilising them differently, allowing them to have space within the same spread and having a bit of text but not a lot. I feel like this would separate them a bit too much, possibly, so I’m not sure.
The initial ideas of your way out are dependent on the recipient. With the images that I got sent, it could go either way in terms of it being a fact, heavy book for mushroom love us all for a city person that wanted to learn more. After talking to my collaborators, we agreed on going with the city person and my critique group, saying that that would probably be the most applicable for the brief.
This first idea is based on having the photo in focus, having it over lines in the book's centre. This would limit the type of binds being used. The text would be placed around the images but not have such a role in reference mushrooms and where they are found.
Sjoa nature reserve works diligently in preserving specific types of nature, such as mushrooms, as they are thoroughly needed to have the circle of life in a forest area. This idea is based around a great everything within the book would have to fit within the grid such as it wouldn’t have stringent rules the great is to have a portrait shape us to reference the most common shape of the mushroom and otherwise it would be without roots as in nature there is no such thing as a perfect example As things deteriorate and change having this modular grid with there for reference that really quite well.
This idea is based on a photo book like many other mushroom books out there that are more of an art book have a massive image and a little bit of text. I don’t think this would be beneficial for my target audience as they were just looking at the mushrooms and not learning anything. I think having put the focus on the text is important.
This idea is more akin to a science book as it would be an image of texts explaining the species of mushrooms and then have the other side. I don’t think this would apply to my target audience either, as it can be offputting for many younger people when there is a lot of text on each page as concentration can be varied.
Utilising overlapping an overlay in illustrations on top of the photographs would be with a quite interesting issue with this is that I might be too busy. Still, it would last a small section of text having dedicated space to it. It would be quite a traditional book.
