rebrand fails
coca-cola
Facing the roaring success of young patriot rival Pepsi-Cola, in April 1985 the world’s most popular soft drink Coca-Cola did the unthinkable and altered its beloved recipe, alongside an illustrious launch of ‘New Coke’. The uproar was instant and almost unanimous. Lifelong Coca-Cola drinkers bombarded the company with complaints and the recipe modification was claimed akin to being unpatriotic. The decision to undertake a bold rebrand and reworking of the recipe had been made following years of growing rivalry between the two major cola brands; to Coca-Cola’s horror, a blind taste test they conducted a few years before had resulted in many participants claiming they preferred Pepsi’s sweet brown, fizzy drink.

Typography is one such element of graphic design that has a significant role to play in determining and enhancing the overall aesthetics of visual communication. Typography is vital in creating logos, advertisements, print copy, and other documents. (McCarthy & Mothersbaugh, 2002)
