animations

Since I'm the most proficient in animation out of my group I volunteered to make the animation. We decided to animate as it would easily adapt to the current state. This way we could showcase the full day in animation form and not just snapshots of it Ice to make it more real for the everyday consumer. We went back and forth a lot of cities to showcase, it's quite difficult to get normal readings now as a lot of things are closed and people aren't really going out in about a lot of factories have closed down. We decided to go to Beijing as they had a more drastic change compared to all the other countries right now. It also showcases a slightly drastic change, as all measuring is to the extreme where he can't even live in it you never really get to the all dark grey one unless it was Harmful to be anyone a period most places all within the bottom 3 ranges. I have illustrated the full scale of it as you can see how it changes and we walked numbers it is equivalent to. I just did it two ways of animating it 1 going around and around the main circle in more of a confused waiting one going in and out like a breathing pattern we decided to go for the breathing pattern one as it is more relevant to air pollution. the worst air quality the quicker the circles will move in and out as if it's wrapping rapid breathing and you can't really get an actual good breath of air.

i tested one with black background but is looses some of the contrast that the white supplies, as well for a public screen if it was badly polluted it would look grey instead of white and that would also be effective.

air pollution

We started by discussing what topics we could do, we were talking about possibly doing screen time. The issue with that is that is quite personal and to make a difference it has to be something that pops up on your screen and that wasn't something we were all that interested in doing. We were wanting to do something that is a bigger intervention. So we talked about environmental issues such as pollution overpopulation water rising and the use of plastic. We ended up working with pollution as overpopulation could seem more of a hit list unlike celebrating peoples death possibly, could also be quite helpful coz there's so much research about what the earth could actually take in terms of population. But we enjoy air pollution us it's something that has been showcased the fab bit during the lockdown and it's quite a feasible project to do it in a couple of days. We found a couple websites that showcase the air pollution around the world, and we then settled on having a public intervention showcasing the pollution in the city. As it's not as important to know it when he lived in the countryside asked the air is better there. We talked about to do an overview of the years such as the countdown Clock, We settled on doing an hourly update of it instead as it is more vital for public display than a yearly average. We then set off and made five different suggestions of what kind of illustration or logo we have to illustrate pollution with that would also work in a public display it makes sense.

We did some research into how pollution is measured and we found that the use this horrible colour system we might test it, but it's probably not going to be in the end result. As it was not something we were aware of all the general public probably wouldn't be aware of. I don't think it would be sustainable to use the colour scheme as it goes from green, yellow, orange, red, purple and burgundy. We were talking about doing a blue coat maybe into a grey. Or play around with a bit see how it goes. We also talked about how to illustrate how about pollution was. We found out that it is measured air quality index or AQI But it's not common knowledge. So we settled on probably doing percentages instead as it's more universal. He could probably be part of if it was a big-screen part of it but I don't think he'd be the main bit. So you have to do one out of 100. Charys is looking into this a bit more So we can figure out how to do it.

waves

waves were one of the things we talked about before we split up to make the tests was using waves as is often illustrated with waves and rounded shapes. So I did somewhere used a couple of different methods of it 1 using the line weight, another one using the intensity of the wave.

circles

I also took inspiration from how molecules react and the denser the molecules are the worse the pollution is so using these circles and overlapping them with a low opacity to create a darker image, showcasing the air pollution when it's nearly black could be quite effective in combination with some sort of type.

Arch

Continue on with the wave idea, but also being inspired by chimneys and the ambition of them as that is the most used way of showcasing pollution. I use different intensities of the wave pattern to create a more busy look to it ask to showcase the levels from one to six I've only made 5 cause I forgot it but it's going to be six.

Type

To create a visual using type for this issue and wanted to play around with the Canning of the letters, and showcasing air quality by allowing the latest of space to breathe. the worst pollution type illustration is the one with the type as a tight kerning that again referencing the molecules. I've also played around with the O using us showcasing it like a graph, I should probably have done it the other way around so the lower one equals lower emissions and the higher one is higher emissions, that could be changed. I kept the type simple to not distract from it, I think it might work and be quite fun, it could be animated so it moves possibly.

Line of circles

I also did another one with spacing, I found out that I just think it looks like a target when it does ski shooting so that's not going to happen it could be interesting to do something about density though. It needs more shapes for it to work but it might be too convoluted as well.

Waves

Going back to the waves I did a test with it being horizontal instead of vertical. the first one didn't go quite right as it looked more like the heightmaps. That's not what I want, it also saw it looks like the things that they put by analysis when you get your nails done as it's too even.

I didn't know the test using different amounts of waves and also the height of it if we did anything water-based it is better but in terms of doing her base thing, I think it looks a bit off.

We decided to go with a mix of the circle idea and the last wave idea initially to do some sort of overlapping or sticking out whilst showcasing the heightened pollution. I'm going to make a couple of draughts for it different versions intensities of the waves.

shape development

From our talk about what we're going to do in terms of the symbol, we decided to go with combining two of my initial ideas. the circle one was against denser and denser the worse the areas and also the wave one. So I started doing some shapes and overlaying them and seeing how they looked both with outlined and low opacity overlap. We talked about what it looked like and we kind of come to the conclusion that it looked virus ask that's not something we really want to do. So I tested out some karma shapes as well but just didn't look quite right. So we went back to the initial ideas of justice doing simple circles and overlaying them. This would also be a lot easier to animate so it'll be easy to get done by Thursday.

We were chatting about of creating and colour palette and we were talking bout possibly using the colours that are used in measuring air pollution but it all came to send consensus that is that people don't really know of it and it's not that important to us more important to illustrate how it would be for a normal person to understand it. So we wanted to go with a blue tone beacuse the sky is blue and also O 3 often illustrated by using blue. The air gets more of a gray tone when it is worse pollutes so we went with the blue to grey scheme. The first colour scheme was a bit too similar so I tested one with more contrast and we decided to go with that one.

Elinor then did some quick ideas for circles overlapping initially we decided to do the circles instead of the wavy circles.

I did some a couple tests with the colours one keeping the last colour and then overlapping the new colour in the color scheme on top of it and one we're just all the circles on the same colour for each stage, we decided to go with the former one as it looked cleaner and more simple it would also not distract from the numbering that we're going to put inside of it.
